Abstract

This study was to know the effect of monoterpenoids(geraniol and nerol) on cultured skin melanoma cells. The cytotoxic and antitumor activity of genaniol and nerol on 3T3 fibroblast and skin melanoma cells were evaluated by tetrazolium MTT(MTT
assay)
and neutral red(NR assay) colorimetric assay methods. The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was also measured. The light microscopic study was carried out to observe porphological changes or cultured 3T3 fibroblast and skin melanoma cells.
@ES The results were as follows ;
@EN 1 The MTT absorbance on skin melanoma cells was significantly deceased by treatment with 25§ of geraniol and nerol respectively.
2. The NR uptake activity on skin melanoma cells treated with nerol was significantly decreased more than geraniol.
3. The LDH activity on skin melanoma cells was significantly increased by treatment with 50§ of nerol.
4. The number of skin melanoma cells were decreased and morphological changes were severe from 25§ of nerol.
5. The cytotoxicity of nerol was weakened in 3T3 fibroblast. These results indicated that nerol possessed a low cytotoxicity and a strong antibumor activity.
